About This Leather

Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather from Wickett & Craig, a Pennsylvania tannery that's been at it since 1867.

Veg tanning uses tannins pulled from tree bark, and it takes weeks. Most leather made today is chrome-tanned in about a day. The slow method costs more, but you get leather with some backbone — firm, dense, holds its shape instead of going soft in your bag.

This hide is undyed. No pigment, no topcoat sprayed over the top to even out the color. It arrives pale, close to raw wood. Nothing is covering up what the leather does next.

Sunlight does most of the work from there. A few weeks on a desk near a window and it starts pulling toward honey. A year of getting carried and it's a deep golden brown, darkest at the corners where your hands land. Small scratches buff out under your thumb. Water spots settle in and fade.

Before you buy: natural vachetta is not a forgiving leather. It marks easily in the first few months — a drop of coffee, a wet countertop, oil from your fingers. Those marks are permanent, and they'll show more on a pale hide than they ever would on a dyed one. It also won't darken evenly; the spots you touch most will get there first. If you want a journal that looks the same in a year as it does out of the box, this isn't it. If you want one that records where it's been, it is.

Care Instructions

To keep it looking its best:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water or excessive moisture.
  • If it gets wet, allow it to air dry fully before using it again.
  • If desired, apply a small amount of quality leather conditioner every few months to maintain suppleness.
